Tvia Streaming-Media Processor Used by Leading Video-On-Demand Manufacturer
New Video-On-Demand Service to Be Available to Chinese Cable Subscribers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2001--Tvia, Inc. (Nasdaq:TVIA - news) today announced that PrediWave Corporation is incorporating Tvia's CyberPro™ 5000 family of streaming media processors in its coaxial, cable-based video-on-demand (VOD)/digital broadcast (DB) set-top boxes.

Tvia believes that the use of its products by PrediWave will enable new interactive services and platforms for PrediWave's coaxial, cable based VOD/DB set-top boxes. PrediWave currently holds several patents on hardware and software for end products that deliver personal video services (PVS) incorporating VOD, DB, digital video recorder (DVR) and distance learning services.

Typical VOD requires service providers to create an expensive highway of two-way network infrastructure. Now, PrediWave believes that its subscribers will enjoy the benefits of VOD over almost any network, including cable television (CATV) and digital broadcast services (DBS).

"We believe that PrediWave's technology will permit DBS and CATV broadcasters to deliver digital VOD, DB and DVR services to networks with millions of subscribers, even on the current one-way infrastructure. The technology is a good example of how interactivity is being developed worldwide,'' said Vahe Akay, Tvia's Vice President of Marketing. "We believe our streaming media processors are a necessary design ingredient that will enable the simultaneous display of broadcast television and Internet content into homes in China and eventually worldwide.''

PrediWave believes that its VOD alternative can save Chinese cable service providers and subscribers a substantial amount of money. ``The ability to deliver VOD for the mass market has been elusive,'' said Tony Qu, President of PrediWave Corporation. ``Employing Tvia's CyberPro streaming media processor along with our proprietary technology can let us share new technologies and communication tools with the rest of the world. PrediWave's solution is targeted at dense population areas like medium-sized and big cities.''
"We anticipate that deployment will start in the third quarter of 2001 in several major cities in China, including Beijing. We successfully finished several field tests in December 2000 and March 2001, in the real operating environment of the Beijing Cable TV network, which has millions of subscribers,'' Mr. Qu concluded.
